Narathiwat train bombing suspect dies in firefight

A man wanted in connection with the deadly bombing of a train in Narathiwat last year was killed during a raid by security forces in Rueso district yesterday.

Three combined units from Narathiwat Task Force 30 and the 49th Rangers Company raided house No.1 in Bucho Bongo village of tambon Sawo about 1.25am.

They were acting on a report that Abdulloh Buraheng, 30, was hiding there.

Abdulloh was suspected of being involved in the bombing of Yala-Sungai Kolok train No.453 at kilometre marker 1075 on Nov 18 last year. The explosion caused the train to derail, killing defence volunteer Panakorn Chumkaew and seriously injuring 16 other passengers.

Security forces surrounded the house and ordered Abdulloh to surrender. The suspect refused and opened fire on the officers, who responded in kind, officials said.

Abdulloh was shot four times and died at the scene. A pistol was found near his body.

Pol Sub Lt Pisith Chatwatanathada of Rueso police station said 18 militants were involved in the train bombing and warrants had been issued for four of them _ Abdulloh, Mayuding Haji Sani, Maroning Buraheng and Abdulloh Maero.

Also yesterday, police charged a teenager who allegedly kicked a monk during morning alms in Muang district on Saturday.

The man was named as Sobree Daramae, a 23-year-old Muslim from Pattani.

Witnesses said Phra Apichart Khanongkhu, 36, a monk at Wat Treemitr in tambon Satengnok, was making his daily alms round when five teenagers on two motorcycles confronted him.

One of the teens kicked the monk, causing his alms bowl to slip out of his hand and drop to the ground, before they fled on their motorcycles, the witnesses said.

After checking footage from security cameras in the area, police arrested five suspects and seized their motorcycles.

Mr Sobree allegedly told police he kicked the monk because he was drunk.

Police charged all five with being involved in an assault.

Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Pracha Promnok yesterday said security agencies will finalise the government's stance on the Barisan Revolusi Nasional separatist group's five demands for ongoing peace talks in the far South within two weeks.
