Green light for Democrat shakeup

The executive committee of the Democrat Party has given the green light to a plan to restructure the party, chairman of the working group for reform, Asawin Wiphusiri said on Tuesday.

Mr Asawin, a party list MP, said the executive committee's meeting, chaired by party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva, agreed on Monday that the party should have three main committees - the executive committee, the committee for zones supervision, and the advisory committee.

The executive committee  would would comprise 25 members, up from an earlier proposed 15 members. The 10 additional members would comprise five more deputy leaders, one for each of the five regions, and five deputy leaders under the party leader's quota, to be responsible for various fields  such as economic, social and foreign affairs.

The executive committee on Monday passed a resolution to amend the party's regulations to facilitate the restructuring of the party. The resolution was expected to be forwarded to a meeting of party's MPs next week. After that a general assembly would be called to amend the regulations.

The party would ask the Election Commission if the election of the executive committee and the party leader could be made at the same time, Mr Asawin said.
