Pornpan 'Joyce TK' Rattanamethanon will be released soon after serving more than eight years in prison.

The Ratchada Criminal Court on Tuesday ordered the release of Pornpan 'Joyce TK' Rattanamethanon, one half of the late 90s dance-pop duo Triumph Kingdom, after the ex-singer spent eight years and 10 months in prison for possession of illicit drugs with intent to sell.

Pornpan, 32, and her boyfriend Jitpat Sungsuwan, 33 were arrested in November 2004 during a police sting operation. They had in their possession 4,040 methamphetamine pills, or yaba.

The couple allegedly confessed during questioning but later decided to fight their case in court.

In December 2005, the former pop singer was sentenced to eight years and one additional month in prison and a fine of 340,000 baht, while Jitpat was handed 33 years and four months in jail and a fine of 800,000 baht. The couple decided to appeal.

In July 2007, the Appeals Court sentenced Pornpan, the first defendant, to a life sentence and a fine of 1.2 million baht. The sentence was reduced to 33 years and five months in jail and a fine of 800,000 baht because she gave useful testimony.

Jitpat's prison term of 33 years and four months and a fine of 800,000 baht was upheld.

The two took their cases to the Supreme Court, seeking lighter punishment for their offences.

The Supreme Court on Monday found evidence presented by the first defendant Pornpan partially convincing, so reverted to the ruling given by the first court that handled the case.

The singer had by this point already spent eight years and 10 months in prison, meaning she had served nine months more than the Criminal Court’s ruling. Her extra nine month-prison time was factored in to her fine, resulting in it being reduced from 340,000 baht to 282,000 baht.

Pornpan was released from Bang Khen Women’s Prison at around 7pm after her family paid the fine.

The court upheld the Appeal Court’s ruling for Jipat.
