Court rejects charter petitions

The Constitution Court on Wednesday rejected two petitions seeking a ruling on the constitutionality of the charter amendment changing the composition of the Senate.

One of the petitions was filed by 142 MPs led by opposition chief whip Jurin Laksanavisit, and the other by 68 senators led by Paiboon Nititawan.

The lawmakers cited Section 154 paragraph 1 of the constitution in filing the petitions.

The court threw out the two petitions on the grounds that Section 291 of the constitution states that a petition regarding a charter amenment must be made under Sections 150 and 151, not Section 154.

Therefore, the petitions did not meet the criteria set by the constitution.
