To celebrate its National Day on Saturday, the Embassy of Spain will hold two cultural performances offering a taste of Spanish opera music and flamenco dancing at Siam Society next week.

The Embassy of Spain presents an opera concert and a flamenco performance, as part of ‘Spanish Week’ at Siam Society on Oct 15 and 17.

The "Zarzuela (Spanish Opera) Concert" will present works by great Spanish composers in a special "Antologia de Musica Espanola" on Oct 15 at 7pm. The evening will also pursue a lighter vein with songs such as Suena Guitarrico Mio, Diga Usted Senor Platero and the iconic De Espana Vengo, and No Puede Ser, which was made world famous by Placido Domingo.

The concert will be performed by Grand Opera, Thailand's only touring opera company, with Spanish opera star Lluis Llaneza as a special guest. Two days later on Oct 17, Ursula Lopez Dance Company will present an evening of flamenco performance, "Abriendo Caminos", also starting at 7pm.

The show is directed and choreographed by dancer Ursula Lopez. Moving between the different flamenco styles, Ursula, accompanied by her dancers and musicians, intends with Abriendo Caminos to convey feelings and emotions, giving the world an updated view of flamenco.

Both shows are part of "Spanish Week", which opens with the Spanish Film Festival at SF World Cinema, CentralWorld, from Oct 14-20.

The film festival will be screening eight contemporary films by Spain's leading filmmakers. The line-up includes Blancanieves on Oct 14 at 7.30pm, Miel De Naranjas on Oct 15 at 7pm, Arrugas on Oct 16 at 7pm, Los Ninos Salvajes on Oct 17 at 7pm, Grupo 7 on Oct 18 at 7pm, Una Pistola En Cada Mano on Oct 19 at 5pm, The Pelayos on Oct 19 at 7pm, and Silencio En La Nieve on Oct 20 at 7pm.

All films are in Spanish with either English or Thai subtitles.

While there is no entrance fee to the cultural performances or the film screenings, seats will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.
