Cache of old ammo found in Krabi

A huge cache of ammunition was found in a cave in Lamthap district of Krabi province on Wednesday during a police crime suppression campaign.

Pol Col Banlue Chuvet, deputy chief of Krabi police, said the ammunition was found in a cave in Village Group 2 of tambon Dindaeng.

The haul included more than 20,000 live rounds of M60 and M88 submachine gun ammunition wrapped in old newspapers dated Dec 5, 1979.

The officer said the ammunition might have belonged to communist insurgents who in the past conducted an armed struggle against the authorities but later laid down their arms and joined government rehabilitation schemes.

The discovery was made during a police crime suppression drive sparked by the killing of a contractor and two of his men by gunmen over a business conflict last week.
