The Thai Red Cross Society will mark Asean Day for Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (ADDM) and International Day for Disaster Reduction (IDDR) at the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre tomorrow.

Held in collaboration with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the United Nations and the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, the event will feature 15 booths with a variety of activities starting from 10am to 8pm.

This year's theme will focus on people with disabilities and the programme line-up will include a seminar, a rescue procedure demonstration, a sniffing dog demonstration, music performed by the disabled, fun games and quizzes with prizes.

The first 500 people who participate at the Thai Red Cross booth will receive a free T-shirt.

The IDDR is a day to celebrate how people and communities are reducing their risk to disasters and raising awareness about the importance of disaster risk reduction, or DRR.

It was first celebrated on the second Wednesday of October with the approval of the UN General Assembly in 1989 as a way to promote a global culture of disaster reduction.

However, the new date of Oct 13 was designated in 2009 and has been celebrated jointly with the ADDM ever since. This year's event in Bangkok is held a day before the actual celebration, which falls on Sunday.

There is no admission fee.
