ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT

Welcome to Guru’s Gate Crasher, your ultimate guide to finding something fresh to do in this big city.

PARTY

To help you get your disco prowess into gear for the weekend, Spoiled Rotten are hosting another of their Destroy The Dancefloor parties tonight (Oct 11). This round features Sydney jock Ron Radge, who is bunkered with Modular Records, the crew responsible for some of the finest tweaks from Down Under. Support will come from local talents Boogie G, Capo Ultra and DJLOWS. The party is on at Cosmic Cafe (RCA Block C, Rama IX Road, 081-304-6907). Entry is a mere B200. Things should warm up around midnight.

ART OPENING

To veer a little left of centre tomorrow (Oct 12), head for Sympathetic Overtones from the Will, a night full of experimental music, performance and video art in what seems about as fringe as the city gets. Performances on the night will come in the form of live music by Fabrizio de Bon aka Fukte (Italy), live music by Kijjaz (Thailand), performance by Blu Simon Wasem (Brazil) & Cece Nobre (lots), plus an all-in finale from everyone involved. Three video artists will discourse their views of society by appropriating found footage in four pieces. Venue is Jam Cafe (41 Charoen Rat Soi 1, 089-889-8059, facebook.com/JAMCAFEBKK). Entry is by a suggested donation of B80, with things kicking off around 8pm.

FIGHT

To make you feel better about yourself, go watch guys beat the crap out of each other tomorrow (Oct 12) at Rebels of MMA. After spending some time on the controversial list, MMA (mixed martial arts) has recently been sanctioned by the Ministry of Tourism & Sports. Organisers are promising seven bouts, so there should be plenty of blood, sweat and tears to keep the crowd entertained and make Ryan Gosling look like even more of a p*ssy. The fights are on at Insanity Nightclub (234 Sukhumvit Soi 12, 02-653-2923, clubinsanitybangkok.com), which sounds about right for the event. Entry is B2,000 (floor) or B3,500 (podium). Doors open at 5pm; fights at 6pm.

SPOKEN WORD

For something less violent, try A Creative Night of Poetry & Cocktails on Sat (Oct 12). Cocktails will be two for one all night, and the poetry will come from two locals before the mic is opened to the audience. It's the perfect place to try out your beatnik potential before you go global; with some liquid assistance, of course. It's on at newly opened comfort cafe Chomp (Samsen Soi 1, 084-098-8633, facebook.com/chompcafe) in the bourgeoning scene around Phra Nakhon. Should be worth the trip across town to make it. Entry is free.

DJ

Also on tonight (Oct 11) is a ReGenerate party, fetchingly titled Return of the Ho. Although it sounds like a professional's homecoming party, it’s a reference to headliner Oliver Ho, aka Raudive, who played almost a year ago at the crew's debut event. He will return to spin his sounds and push a new album, A System Of Objects, recently out on Macro label. Props go to the party for the cinematic poster art. Support will come from The Outsider, Damian Porter and nolens.volens. Entry is B400 with a drink. Venue is Glow (96/4-5 Sukhumvit Soi 23, 02-261-4446, www.glowbkk.com).
