Car exports hit new high

Car exports hit an all time high in September, with 118,253 units sent abroad, Surapong Paisitpatanapong, spokesman for the Automotive Industry Club, said on Thursday.

In August, the club reported that auto exports were the highest in the 25 years of the industry sector with 103,065 vehicles shipped out.

But exports for September were up 16.76% on the same month last year and 13.47% on August. The value of the exports for the month stood at 52.34 billion baht, up 7.08% year on year, said Mr Surapong.

Exports over the first nine months of 2013 totalled 874,341 units, up 14.22% year on year, while the value of exports in the period was up 7.88% to stand at 383.67 billion baht.

Vehicle output in September dropped 16.28% in comparison to the same month in 2012, but rose 0.86% in August, to 194,737 units. Vehicle output was below the 200,000 unit level for the second time in 16 months.

Output over the first eight months of the year amounted to 1,930,251 units, an increase of 11.99% on the same period last year.

Domestic car sales over the month totalled 94,859 units, down 28.5% on last September, and a 5.41% decline on August.

Car sales over the first nine months of the year stood at 1,034,199 units, up 3.4% on the same period last year.

Mr Surapong projected car output for 2013 would come in at 2.55 million units. Of the total, 1.15 million units will be for export, with 1.4 million units for domestic sales.

Car output in 2012 totalled 2.45 million units, with domestic sales of 1.44 million units, he added.
