20kg bomb in South misses target

Six soldiers narrowly escaped death when a bomb exploded in Rueso district of Narathiwat just 20 metres away from where they were on Sunday afternoon.

Rueso police station was told about a bomb at 12.20pm by villagers. Officers went to inspect the scene where they found a hole about 1.3m deep and two metres wide at a molehill on a roadside and some bomb fragments. The police found that explosive material was put into a 20kg gas cylinder and detonated with a communications radio.

Lt Thamnong Chetawan of Narathiwat Task Force 30 said he was in charge of the group of security officials sent to investigate whether insurgents were in the area. When they arrived at the scene, an unknown number of insurgents hiding in the rubber forest detonated the bomb just before they reached the spot.
