Police have identified a man suspected of being behind Saturday's double bomb attack which killed two military rangers and injured six other rangers and five journalists in Narathiwat's Rangae district.

Police believe Manu Mama, a suspect wanted by police in recent criminal cases, was responsible for the attack, said a police source yesterday.

A manhunt is being conducted to locate Mr Manu, who was known as having exceptional skills in bomb assembly, said the same source, adding he is believed to be hiding in Rangae district.

A funeral bathing ceremony was organised for Ranger Suradej Khamkate yesterday before his body was flown to his hometown, Bangkok, in the afternoon.

As for the other dead victim of the bomb blast, Ranger Assaman Jehama, his body was buried in a Muslim grave in Rangae district yesterday morning.

Two rangers who sustained slight injuries in the attack have been discharged from hospital while four others are still being treated in hospital and are now considered stable.

The five journalists wounded in the attack are being treated in hospital and their conditions are considered stable as well.

A fresh bombing attack was carried out in Rueso district yesterday but no one was hurt, police said.

The roadside bombing happened around midday, about 20m away from six soldiers from the Narathiwat 30 Special Task Force who were patrolling a road in Ban Kado in tambon Rueso.

Police said the bomb, which was planted on one side of the road, consisted of 20kg of explosives stuffed in a cooking gas cylinder and was detonated by a walkie-talkie radio signal.

Meanwhile, the 41st Ranger Regiment in Yala detained a suspected insurgent in a house raid in Pattani's Khok Pho district early yesterday.

The suspect was identified as Dulroni Matiyo, 50, who is wanted in connection with recent security cases. Mr Dulroni, however, denied any wrongdoing.
