Alliance Francaise Bangkok will put on show "On the Beaten Track", a photo exhibition by Olivier Evrard and Prasit Leepreecha at its new location from Oct 31-Nov 17.
Through archival photos taken by travellers, missionaries and ethnologists, this exhibition recounts the changes that have taken place among highland minorities in northern Thailand from the 1950s until today, highlighting their salient traits and focusing on their significance within cultural diversity, long viewed as problematic by the government but now seen as a heritage to be preserved.
Olivier Evrard is an ethnologist from the Institut de Recherche pour le Developpement, a French development research institution. Since 1994, he has been conducting field research in the highlands of northern Thailand and Laos and has worked in collaboration with Thai ethnologist Prasit Leepreecha from 2005.
They have gathered and digitised a large number of archival photos on minorities, creating an iconographic collection which they keep expanding on each of their field studies.
Both researchers will lead a guided tour on the opening night which is set for Oct 31 at 6.30pm. Alliance Francaise is located on Witthayu Road and opens Monday to Saturday from 8.30am-5.30pm.
