Sights, Sounds and Slogans! world day for audiovisual heritage contest

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT

To celebrate this year's World Day for Audiovisual Heritage on Oct 27, Unesco Bangkok is holding a competition calling for slogans that best capture the importance of this occasion.

Moving images and sound recordings are emblematic of 20th century culture, telling stories and offering historical, as well as cultural details often unavailable elsewhere. As such, efforts to preserve these cultural treasures for future generations deserve support.

In the Asia-Pacific region in particular, however, efforts to preserve vintage film and sound recordings face many obstacles, such as funding woes and weather conditions unsuited to affordable, long-term storage of recordings.

The World Day for Audiovisual Heritage was first held in 2005 to commemorate the adoption in 1980 by the 21st United Nations General Conference, of the Recommendation for the Safeguarding and Preservation of Moving Images.

Unesco's contest is aimed at raising awareness about this issue in the hopes of encouraging efforts to promote attention to the importance of audiovisual heritage.

Entrants can submit a short, catchy slogan for the World Day for Audiovisual Heritage by completing the form available from www.unescobkk.org/world-day-for-audiovisual-heritage-contest.

The top slogan as selected by Unesco's panel will win a free screening of the Unesco World Heritage Register film, The Wizard of Oz, complete with a cocktail reception for those 20 years of age and older, at Friese-Greene Club, an independent, private movie house and lounge dedicated to celebrating classic films located on Sukhumvit Soi 22.

A further 15 successful entrants will be given a pair of tickets each to attend a movie of their choice at Major Cineplex's Siam Paragon branch.

The submission deadline is Oct 27.
