Surapong to go to Cambodia for talks

Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul will go to Cambodia for talks with his counterpart Hor Namhong in Poipet on Monday.

The talks come two weeks before the International Court of Justice is due to deliver its ruling on the Preah Vihear temple dispute on Nov 11.

Defence Ministry permanent-secretary Nipat Thonglek said Saturday the talks will be held to boost relations between the two countries.

Representatives from the armed forces will also participate, he said.

Nattawut Pothisaro, a deputy permanent secretary at the Foreign Ministry, said the two ministers are scheduled to hold a joint press conference at the border after the talks.

He said the Foreign Ministry wanted to assure border residents that Thailand and Cambodia's relationship will not be affected by the ruling.

Mr Nattawut said he and the Thai ambassador to the Hague, Veerachai Plasai, will visit the border province of Si Sa Ket on Nov 5 to explain issues surrounding Thai and Cambodian relations to concerned officials.
