A civilian was killed and a defence volunteer was injured in separate attacks in Pattani province on Monday morning, police said.

Pol Col Jirasate Dao-ngerntrakul, chief of Saiburi police, said he received a report of a drive-by shooting at 6.30am. Jae-airsoh Yakoh, 52, was attacked while she was riding her motorcycle when a gunman on another motorbike fired at her.

Jae-airsoh, who was returning home from a teashop, had been shot in the head with a .38-calibre bullet. Villagers nearby took her to Sai Buri Crown Prince Hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries.

At 9.30am, police received a report of a roadside bombing in Pattani's Yarang district, injuring a defence volunteer identified as Somphan Limbara, 24. The bomb went off as a team of soldiers were on patrol in a village.

The defence volunteer sustained shrapnel injuries and was rushed to Yarang Hospital.

Police were investigating both incidents.

In Narathiwat on Sunday night, a team of soldiers exchanged fire with members of the Runda Kumpulan Kecil (RKK) militant group and seized a stash of guns and ammunition after the clash.

Lt Col Eakapol Leknok, commander of  Narathiwat Task Force 30,  said the soldiers were on patrol on a mountain in Rueso district and came across five to seven armed militants. The two sides clashed for about 30 minutes before the insurgents retreated.

Authorities arrested one of the RKK members and seized a stash of guns and ammunition, cell phones, cash and a pickup truck.

Lt Col Eakapol said the seized weapons were to be used for attacks at army bases in the far South as schools started to open this week.
