Pulo, BIPP to join peace talks

Pulo, BIPP to join peace talks

Representatives of two other separatist groups - the Pattani United Liberation Organisation (Pulo) and the Barisan Islam Pembebasan Pattani (BIPP) - are expected to join the next round of peace talks in Malaysia, Deputy Prime Minister Pracha Promnok said.

Pol Gen Pracha said he had been informed of this by the Malaysian facilitator of the talks, Ahmad Zamzamin Hashim, who recently called on him.

The Malaysian facilitator said Pulo and BIPP would each send representatives to attend the next round of talks between the Thai delegation and the Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN), expected to be held in early December in Malaysia.

The RKK, another separatist group, was not yet ready to join the coming round of talks.

Pol Gen Pracha said at the next talks the Thai side would still have 15 delegates led by National Security Council (NSC) chief Paradorn Pattanatabut.

Lt Gen Paradorn said Pulo would send two representatives, the BIPP one and the BRN four, while the others would be members of their legal staff.

He said Pulo would initially limit its role to expressing opinions.  He expected the RKK to take part in another round of talks later.

Asked about current insurgency operations in the three southern border provinces, Lt Gen Paradorn said it had become clearer which separatist groups were responsible and that the focus of their attacks was now on state officials.
