Consumer confidence down in Oct

The Consumer Confidence Index (CCI) dropped again in October to 76.6 points, from 77.9 points in September, the Economic and Business Forecasting Centre at the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce reported on Thursday.

The centre said overall confidence in the economy during the month fell to 66.6 points, while confidence in job opportunities dropped to 69.4 points and confidence in people's future income went down to 92.7 points.

All consumer confidence indices were down for the seventh month in a row and hit a 19-month-low, the centre said.

An index below 100 points indicates low consumer confidence.

Negative factors that eroded confidence include concerns about political uncertainty, the Bank of Thailand slashing its growth projection for 2013, the continued decline of exports in Sept, low agricultural product prices and the floods that hit provinces in the East, the centre said.

Positive factors countering this include the central bank’s monetary policy committee’s decision to keep its key policy rate unchanged at 2.5%, the decline in domestic retail prices of fuel and the baht’s appreciation, the centre added.
