PT seeks Democrat Party's dissolution

The Pheu Thai Party on Thursday petitioned the Election Commission to ask the Constitution Court to dissolve the Democrat Party because its leader Abhisit Vejjajiva had joined an anti-government rally led by Democrat MP for Surat Thani Suthep Thaugsuban.

The petition was filed by Pheu Thai spokesman Prompong Nopparit to EC chairman Apichart Sukhagghanond.

Mr Prompong said there was evidence that Mr Abhisit, the Democrat Party's leader, went up on the stage and made a speech to anti-amnesty protesters on Ratchadamnoen Avenue on Nov 5.

Since the rally was organised by Mr Suthep, a Democrat MP, it was believed the Democrat Party was behind it.

Therefore, the party had violated Section 94 (4) of the Political Party Act and the political party registrar could seek its dissolution, according to Mr Prompong.
