Govt plans to up border transport

The Transport Ministry plans to increase the number of buses and cargo lorries operating between Thailand and Cambodia to 150 vehicles each and will promote overland transportation between Thailand, Laos and China.

Permanent secretary for transport Somchai Siriwattanachot yesterday said the ministry was preparing a draft agreement on cross-border transport between Thailand and Cambodia as demand for land transportation increases.

The number of buses and lorries crossing between Thailand and Cambodia was not enough to meet the demand, he said. Under the current agreement, each side can provide 40 buses and lorries for cross-border transportation but the ministry aims to increase it to 150 each.

The ministry also planned to promote overland transportation between Thailand and neighbouring countries, particularly a route linking Thailand with Laos and China.

The ministry will discuss plans with representatives from Laos and China.
