Wife's mother admits to Jakkrit murder

The mother-in-law of former national sports shooter Jakkrit "X" Panichpatikum, who was shot dead in his car last month, confessed on a Channel 3 morning news programme that she acted alone in hiring the gunmen to kill her daughter's husband.

"I was only person behind this [Jakkrit's murder] because I have only one daughter [Jakkrit's wife Dr Nitiwadee Pucharoenyos] and my husband died a longtime ago," 72-year-old Surang Duangchinda told the news anchor on Monday morning.

Mrs Surang said her daughter was so in love with Jakkrit and had to persevere with "countless abuses and beatings" committed by her husband.

The suspect said she was unable to help her daughter even though she pleaded with her son-in-law to stop, but he instead threatened her by pulling out a gun.

She and her daughter were mistreated by Jakkrit on a continuous basis and all they could do was to be calm and give words of encouragement to each other, she said.

"When my daughter was pregnant for the third time, he continued to abuse her physically and mentally until the child was miscarried. I was thinking ways to get my daughter out of this misery, but she loved her husband so much.

"When he came out of prison and tried to reconcile, the same problems happened again and again, and this made me think that he would never change," Mrs Surang said.

Dr Nitiwadee said when she learned her mother was behind the former Olympic shooter's murder she knew her mother loved her and she wanted to go to prison instead of her.

Mrs Surang and Dr Nitiwadee were scheduled to meet Social Development and Human Security Minister Paveena Hongsakula on Monday to thank her for her support and were due to report to police in the afternoon.
