Ex-senator files for Dem's dissolution

Former senator Ruangkrai Leekijwattana on Monday filed a petition with the Constitution Court seeking the dissolution of the Democrat Party and the banning of Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva and Surat Thani MP Suthep Thaugsuban from elections.

In the petition, Mr Ruangkrai said Mr Abhivisit and Mr Suthep on Nov 7 went up on the stage at the Democracy Monument on Ratchadamnoen Avenue and made a speech calling for the people to form a people's court to consider cases against the government.

On Nov 8 Democrat spokesman Chavanont Intarakomalyasut made a similar call in a press statement at the party's headquarters.

The former senator asked to court rule if Mr Abhisit and Mr Suthep had violated Section 68 of the charter and if Mr Chavanont had breached Section 197 of the constitution.

If so, he asked the court to order the Democrat Party be dissolved and to ban Mr Abhisit and Mr Suthep from elections for five years.
