Sentence for ex-EC member upheld

The Appeals Court on Tuesday upheld the lower court's decision to sentence Prinya Nakchatree, a former Election Commission member, to two years in prison, suspended for two years.

He was one of the four EC members given suspended jail terms for unlawfully awarding themselves a pay rise in 2004.

In this case, four former EC members - Prinya, Veerachai Naewboonnian, Gen Jarupat Ruangsuwan and Pol Gen Wassana Permlarp - were each sentenced by the Criminal Court on Dec 29, 2010 to two years imprisonment for amending EC regulations to give themselves a 20,000 baht pay retroactive pay rise in violation of Section 157 of the Criminal Code.  The jail sentence was suspended for two years.

Prinya and Veerachai appealed. Veerachai died shortly afterwards.

The Appeals Court today upheld the suspended jail term handed to Prinya. Veerachai's appeal was dismissed after his death.

Prinya said he would fight his case in the Supreme Court.
