ATMs: More bank accounts hacked

Eight people filed complaints on Wednesday at the Phaya Thai police station, complaining money had been siphoned out of their bank accounts and that they suspected their accounts had been hacked after they had used a Thai Military Bank (TMB) ATM machine at CP Tower 3 in Ratchathewi district.

Anupol Puwapulpol, a 53-year-old executive director, told police that 400,000 baht had been withdrawn from his bank account over 20 transactions on Tuesday without his consent.

Mr Anupol said that he and several of his colleagues, who also encountered the same problem, had used the same ATM machine prior to having their money stolen. The last time he used the ATM was on Nov 1, he added.

The executive director said his bank suspended his account and affirmed that it would compensate him in full for the incident.

Tawee Rattananukulpong, a 41-year-old office worker, informed authorities that 45,800 baht had been taken out of his bank account on Tuesday without his knowledge.

He said he withdrew from the ATM machine at the CP building last Friday. He added that many of his co-workers who made transactions at the machine had run into the same issue.

Police have contacted TMB to find out whether there is a skimming device installed in the ATM machine and to identify the locations where the withdrawals were made. They have also asked the bank to send them footage from CCTV cameras at the location.

Last week, details of ATM cards obtained from a skimming device found inside a Bangkok Bank ATM machine in front of the Apollo building on Witthayu Road in Pathumwan district were used to withdraw over 1.3 million baht out of 78 individuals' bank accounts from thieves operating in the Ukraine.

The police believe the suspects in the case are foreigners and are conducting further investigations to track them down.

The banks have promised to give the money back to their clients.
