Police said the Toyota Vios car had earlier sped past a police checkpoint on the main highway in Ang Thong province. Highway police, alerted by radio, gave chase.

The fleeing car turned left off the Asian Highway and fled along Rojana road in neighbouring Ayutthaya province, where the pursuing police abandoned the chase when their vehicle hit a motorcycle.

Ayutthaya police were asked to take over the chase. The occupants of the vehicle exchanged gunshots with police as they drove into Ayutthaya’s Muang district.

Police finally found the car abandoned at Kittilawan housing estate in tambon Phailing. Residents told police they saw two men leave the car, scale over the wall of the housing estate and flee.

The police opened the car doors and found 460,000 methamphetamine pills with a street value of about 90 million baht packed in plastic bags inside the vehicle.

Documents found inside the car revealed the vehicle belonged to Jirawat Kamolkaruna, 21, of Pai district in Mae Hong Son province, in the far North.
