Tarit: DSI will work Monday

Officials of the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) expect to work normally on Monday despite calls by anti-government protest leaders for all state officials to stay home.

Protesters on Saturday morning briefly surrounded the DSI headquarters on Chaeng Watthana Road. They broke into the compound but did not enter the building. They placed a symbolic padlock on the door before dispersing and returning to their rally site at the Government Complex nearby.

Protest leader Suthep Thaugsuban, the secretary-general of the People's Democratic Reform Committee, has called for civil servants to stay home on Monday in protest against the "illegitimate" Pheu Thai government.

Mr Suthep also expects workers at most state enterprises to strike on Monday but said those providing essential transport services, including Thai Airways and rail and bus operations, would not have to take part.

DSI chift Tarit Pengdith said his agency would ask its officers to work as normal as the department had a duty to accept and process cases for the public. However, he said he would re-examine the situation again on Sunday.

Mr Tarit said the DSI had backup offices in two locations in case staff cannot get to work at the head office. One location is at the Software Park building on Chaeng Watthana Road, formerly occupied by the Justice Ministry.

The DSI has moved essential documents, evidence, arms and important equipment to other places, he added.
