NBTC probes signal interference claims

The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) is looking into complaints that about 20 satellite-based television channels are being affected by what is suspected to be intentional broadcast-signal interference.

Takorn Tantasit, secretary-general of the NBTC, said Thaicom Plc, a satellite communications provider, informed him of the complaints.

He said the NBTC deployed a vehicle equipped with devices capable of detecting satellite TV signal jammers.

Those who are found to have caused this interference could face a maximum jail sentence of five years and/or a maximum fine of 100,000 baht for violating the radio communication law, he said.

Broadcast signals of Asia Update and Blue Sky, as well as those of free-to-air channels that were relayed by satellite to their audiences, have been interrupted, with signal interference the likely cause.

The broadcast signals have frozen intermittently, said Mr Takorn.

Satellite TV viewers were being encouraged to submit complaints of suspected broadcast-signal interference to the NBTC via at its hotline number 1200.
