Campus shooting 'not a set-up'

Senator Paiboon Nititawan has denied claims by a red-shirt leader that he said the fatal confrontation between students and red-shirt supporters near Ramkhamhaeng University last weekend was planned.

"When I took the Ratchadamnoen anti-government stage, I told the crowd [about what had happened] according to the information I had got from news reports," said the appointed senator, a member of the so-called Group of 40 in the upper chamber.

Earlier Friday, United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) chairwoman Tida Thawornseth said the People's Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) and the opposition Democrat Party had distorted what actually happened near the university by blaming the death of a Ramkhamhaeng student on the government.

She said Mr Paiboon took the stage at a rally on Thursday and told the crowd that the clash last Saturday night near Ramkhamhaeng, which resulted in four fatalities, a student and three red-shirts, were a set-up.

Mr Paiboon also said that the best way to end the ongoing political impasse is to dissolve the House of Representatives according to sections 180 and 181 of the constitution.

The next step, he said, was to invoke Section 7 of the charter which would lead to the installation of a royally appointed prime minister and cabinet.

"Amending Section 291 in order to establish a charter drafting assembly to write a new constitution is not likely as the Constitution Court already issued a ruling that a referendum is required," said the senator.
