Driver, futsal players killed in car crash

A pickup truck carrying a school futsal team overturned and crashed into a tree on Friday in Phichit province, killing three people and injuring seven.

The accident occurred near the 63rd kilometre marker on Highway No. 117, in tambon Thung Yai of Pho Prathap Chang.

The driver, Rungnapha Ritphaet, 44, and two futsal players _ Sarawut Ritdi, 15 and Anakon Rattanakoet, 15 _ died while being taken to Pho Prathap Chang Hospital.

Pol Lt Col Preecha Charnglek, an inspector at Pho Prathap Chang police station, said the vehicle was bringing Bhudda Chinnarat School’s futsol players, ages between 14 and 16, back to Phitsanulok after a competition in Phichit.

Preliminary investigation revealed that one of the vehicle’s tyres popped as the driver was speeding. The car then fell into a ditch, rolled over several times, and hit a tree.
