Pink line bid awaits new government

Pink line bid awaits new government

The bidding for the construction of the Pink Line electric rail route from Khae Rai to Min Buri will be deferred until the new government is installed so that parliamentary backing can be secured.

Mass Rapid Transit Authority governor Yongsit Rojsrikul said yesterday the construction plan was previously set to be tabled for cabinet consideration, with bidding in February.

But as the House of Representatives has been dissolved, the next government will consider the plan and bids could be called by the middle of next year instead, Mr Yongsit said.

The general election is set for Feb 2, but anti-government protesters have vowed to block it from happening until Suthep Thaugsuban's "people's council" proposal is in place and political reform occurs.

The Pink Line route, stretching 34.5km, has already been delayed by more than a year after the project was redesigned as a monorail.

The route will cost 58.6 billion baht.

Mr Yongsit said the Pink Line will also be a pilot model for the Yellow Line between Lat Phrao and Samrong, with a distance of 30.4km.

If the Pink Line project goes smoothly, the Yellow Line would follow quickly, he said.

Bidding for the Yellow Line construction is expected to be called in mid next year and the work would commence in 2015.
