Shutdown disrupts 134 bank branches

A total of 35 commercial bank branches in the capital have been temporarily closed since the first day of the Bangkok Shutdown on Monday, while another 99 branches will close earlier on Tuesday, according to the Bank of Thailand (BoT).

As of 11am on Tuesday, 35 banks, located near anti-government People’s Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) rally sites, closed their doors, the BoT said.

Three Bangkok Bank branches were shut, 17 at Krung Thai Bank, five at Siam Commercial Bank, four at Thai Military Bank, two each at Bank of Ayudhya, Kasikornbank and Thanachart.

The central bank said commercial banks have reported plans to close 99 branches earlier than usual for safety reasons on Tuesday.

They include 72 Thai Military Bank branches, 10 at CIMB Bank, eight at Bank of Ayudhya, five at Krung Thai Bank, and 2 at Tisco Bank.

The Bangkok Post earlier reported that UOB Bank had closed one branch as a result of the Bangkok Shutdown.

A statement from the bank said all branches were open, although the closing time of its Union Mall Lat Phrao and Central Grand Rama 9 branches was brought forward from 7pm to 5pm.
