Protesters rally, send officials home

Anti-government protesters on Friday afternoon surrounded the Phaya Thai District Office where local officials were making preparations for Sunday's advance voting and the Feb 2 general election.

Thaworn Senniam, a former Democrat Party MP, said the People's Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) wanted the district officials to cancel their preparations for the polls.

"We ask you civil servants to stop what you're doing within 20 minutes and return home, or we'll lock the gates," Mr Thaworn said through a loudspeaker truck in front of the district office.

Suree Wadkian, an official at Phaya Thai district, said the meeting scheduled for 1.30pm had to be cancelled and people working in the office gradually left to go home.

Another group of anti-government demonstrators, led by the Network of Students and People for Reform of  Thailand (NSPRT), staged a protest outside the Cabinet Publishing and Gazette Office on Samsen Road.

The group, led by NSPRT coordinator Nitithorn Lamlua, demanded that all officials leave the office immediately.

"The caretaker cabinet lacks the legitimacy to operate the Cabinet Publishing and Gazette Office and officials here will have to stop working until this government resigns," NSPRT member Rachayuth Siriyodhinpakdee announced.
