Tsunami buoy lost in Andaman Sea

Tsunami buoy lost in Andaman Sea

Thailand will install a new tsunami-detection buoy after it lost contact with one of its three buoys in the Andaman Sea.

The buoy is reportedly moving toward Sri Lanka, said National Disaster Warning Centre chief Somsak Khaosuwan, who will send experts to retrieve the buoy and install the new one next week.

The lost buoy has caused loss of communication between the buoy, the undersea detector and the centre.

"This will not affect the warning system because we still have two other buoys," Gp Capt Somsak said.

The centre also works with other countries to monitor the threat of an earthquake around the clock and can inform people in risk areas within 15 minutes if a tsunami is imminent.
