200,000 police for nationwide polls

A total of 200,000 police will be deployed across the country to maintain law and order during this Sunday's general election, assistant police chief Pol Lt Gen Amnart An-artngam said on Wednesday.

Pol Lt Gen Amnart said the 200,000 will comprise members of 1,450 rapid deployment units from local police stations. They will provide security at 93,535 polling units in 375 constituencies across 77 provinces.

The police will avoid using force and engage in peaceful negotiations should problems arise as a result of anti-government protests, he added.

"From an assessment of the situation, we do not believe violence is likely," Pol Lt Gen Amnart said.

"But if there are any incidents, we believe these will be in only a few areas. We have rapid deployment units ready to cope."
