2 rangers die in bomb blast

PATTANITwo military rangers providing security for teachers at a school in Yaring district were killed in a bomb attack there yesterday afternoon, police said.

The victims were named as Wachara Wailap, 22, and Anusak Pinapong, 28. Wachara was from Roi Et while Anusak came from Buri Ram.

Yaring district police were alerted to the explosion about 2.50pm.

The bomb went off about 70 metres from Ban Ma Pring School.

Wachara and Anusak were sitting on a bench in front of tambon Jarang's administration office where they usually sat after escorting the teachers to the school. They were waiting there to escort them back home.

A bomb disposal squad examining the blast scene found that an improvised device with about 30kg of explosives stuffed in a cooking gas cylinder had been buried just under a table next to the bench the rangers were sitting on.

The bomb was detonated with a walkie-talkie, the disposal team said.

Wachara died at the scene while Anusak died later at Panare Hospital.
