Vote body offers to mediate

The Election Commission (EC) yesterday offered to broker talks between the caretaker government and the People's Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) as it prepares for poll re-runs in April.

"Both parties need to take a step back, sit down and talk things out," said EC chairman Supachai Somcharoen.

Mr Supachai said mediators need charisma and must be powerful to encourage the conflicting parties to talk.

The EC is not part of the conflict, and is willing to act as a mediator, he said.

Citing widespread calls for the government and PDRC to go to the negotiating table, he emphasised that dialogue remains the best way to end the political conflict.

Earlier, Chart Pattana Party de-facto leader, Suwat Liptapanlop, also offered to act as mediator between the two sides.

Mr Supachai was speaking before the EC commissioners met to discuss the re-run of the Feb 2 election, which was not completed due to anti-government protests.

The re-run of Jan 26 advance voting is tentatively scheduled for April 20, while the re-run of the Feb 2 election is scheduled for April 27.

Mr Supachai said the EC believes by April the political situation should have improved.

Advance voting was disrupted in several constituencies, while the Feb 2 election could not take place in 28 southern constituencies as anti-government protesters blocked candidates from registering.

Chartthaipattana Party's chief adviser, Banharn Silpa-archa, yesterday called on the EC to draft a new set of regulations for poll re-runs.
