Judges not fazed by court grenade attack

Criminal Court judges' morale has not been shaken by a grenade attack on the court building on Friday night, chief justice Thongchai Senamontri said yesterday.

BLAST PROBE: A forensic police officer examines a window on the seventh floor of the Criminal Court on Ratchadaphisek Road, which was shattered in a grenade attack.

He said while the motive of the attack was unclear it would not sway the judges as they deliberated cases.

"The court was founded 32 years ago and never experienced such a bomb attack," Mr Thongchai said.

Forensic police experts yesterday examined the scene where a grenade, believed to have been fired from an M-79 launcher, shattered the seventh floor of the court building on Ratchadaphisek Road.

The forensic team found traces of black soot on the edges of two glass windows.

One of the windows was completely shattered.

The ceiling of a nearby court room was also partly damaged.

Pieces of the grenade were found scattered over the area.

The officers declared the area off-limits to unauthorised personnel.

The attack took place about 7.40pm on Friday. No one was injured.

Pol Col Chatree Kanchanakanti, chief of the Phahon Yothin police station, said the grenade might have been fired from an area opposite the building.

Closed-circuit television cameras of the court were under repair and they could not capture the images of the suspects.

Mr Thongchai said he was alerted to  the attack shortly after it happened. He reported the incident to Supreme Court President Direk Ingkhaninant and Office of  the Judiciary secretary-general Phattarasak Vannasaeng.

He declined to comment whether the attack was politically motivated as the court has made decisions related to the political crisis.

Mr Thongchai said the attack would not shake the morale of judges as they handled cases in a straightforward manner to deliver justice.

He believed the attack was intended  to intimidate.

Mr Thongchai added the court was a government office and national property and damaging it was the same as damaging society.
