Thai trio secure cards at Asian Tour Q-School final stage

Three Thais, including former national player Poom Saksansin, secured their 2014 cards at the Asian Tour Qualifying School final stage in Hua Hin yesterday.

With the top 40 and ties earning tour cards, Poom fired a final-round 73 for 279 at the par-71 Springfield Royal Country Club.

The other two Thais are Settee Prakongvech and former national player Wasin Sripattranusorn, who finished tied for 27th and 34th respectively.

The winner was Japanese Tani Akinori who closed with a 70 to win the title on 274.

"Finally, I made it. I was so stressful because it was important for my professional career," the 20-year-old said.

In his second competitive tournament as professional, the Chanthaburi-born Poom said that he was lucky to play well in earlier rounds.

Poom represented Thailand at the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou and played at the SEA Games twice, in Indonesia in 2010 and in Myanmar in Decmeber.

He decided to turn pro after taking a bronze medal in the individual event and the team event gold at the 2013 SEA Games.

"I am proud to have played for my country," he said.

In his professional debut at the King's Cup tournament in Hua Hin last month, Poom was tied for 40th and received US$5,850.

He will take part in the 15th Singha Masters in Chiang Rai next week and then the Asian Tour's season-opening SAIL Open in India.
