German found dead in Rayong

RAYONG — A German man was found dead under a tree with a nylon rope tied around his neck and hand at a resort in Klaeng district on Monday morning.

Police were called to Villa Ravadee Resort and Spa on the Laem Mae Phim-Ban Phe Road in tambon Sark Pong at 8am after a member of staff from the resort discovered the body of Bernd Sablottny, 44, lying on the ground face up, outside the single-storey villa home.

Police said Sablottny had a white nylon rope tied around his neck and his left hand. The same type of rope was found tied to a tree branch about two metres above the ground, but was torn apart.

It appeared the German had hung himself on the tree, but the rope snapped causing him to fall onto the ground, said Pol Lt Santi Pakarago, a duty officer at Ban Krum Police Station.

Near Sablottny’s body, police found his backpack containing clothes and 200 baht cash, as well as a motorcycle that he had rented in Pattaya.

A resort security guard said Sablottny looked stressed when he rode the motorcycle back to the resort on Sunday evening. He complained that his wife in Germany told him she had sent him a bank transfer, but he went to an ATM and realised that no cash had been deposited in his account.

Sablottny went to buy beer from a nearby shop and drank until late the night before he was found dead. An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death, Pol Lt Santi said.
