Cops arrest ‘vote blocker’

Min Buri police have arrested a man who allegedly opposed advance voting on Jan 26 and blocked a polling station.

Min Buri police station chief Col Kanchol Intraram yesterday sent a report to the Metropolitan Police Bureau chief Khamronwit Thoopkrachang saying Min Buri police had detained Thaworn Piromchit, the suspect, following an arrest warrant issued by Min Buri Provincial Court.

Mr Thaworn was charged with hindering the election and obstructing voters from entering a polling station. Police arrested him at Preecha Housing Estate 11, Soi Ram Intra 123 in Min Buri district of Bangkok.

Mr Thaworn is among four people wanted on arrest warrants for obstructing the election in Min Buri.

He denied the charges, however, and said he would only give his testimony before the court.

Last Monday, two local leaders of the People’s Democratic Reform Committee in Thung Song district of Nakhon Si Thammarat turned themselves in after being charged with hampering the poll.

Apichart Phetsingoen and Thanongsak Pitakwong were charged with obstructing the Feb 2 election by leading protesters to besiege the Thailand Post office in Thung Song to block officials from taking polling papers to polling stations in four provinces — Nakhon Si Thammarat, Trang, Krabi and Phatthalung.
