Chinese fugitive caught after 16 years

A Chinese man who has an outstanding arrest warrant in China issued 16 years ago for conspiracy to commit murder was arrested in front of his restaurant on Silom Road on Thursday, the Immigration Bureau said.

Pol Maj Gen Warwut Tawwchaikarn, the investigation chief, said  the bureau had cooperated with the Criminal Investigation Bureau of the Chinese National Police to apprehend Wang Tung Xiu, 48.

According to the arrest warrant, Mr Xiu used a gun during a fight on May 7, 1998 which resulted in a person's death. He did not give details.

Mr Xui fled to Thailand by crossing the Mekong River to Chiang Saen district in Chiang Rai after the killing  and had been living here for over 16 years.

Mr Xui worked as a waiter before becoming the restaurant owner.
