Official urges House to be convened

The secretary to the House of Representatives urged the Election Commission (EC) on Thursday to endorse poll results from Feb 2, citing the need for MPs to approve a representative to join international meetings.

Suvijak Nakwatcharachai sent an urgent letter to EC chairman Supachai Somcharoen calling for the House to be convened as the next Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and Related Meetings is drawing near, INN reported.

Pairote Tanbanjong, a former Pheu Thai Party MP, had been selected as one of the IPU executive committee members who will administer the meetings in Geneva from March 12-20.

Mr Suvijak said the country could not send him to the conference until he receives a stamp of approval from the House.

The position is important for a Thai representative to play a key role in the organisation, he added.

The Feb 2 poll was marred by blockades and protests by the People's Democratic Reform Committee and the EC has said it cannot announce the poll results until the election is completed. No polling was possible in 28 constituencies because candidates were prevented from registering.
