The focus point of make-up this season is on accentuating your peepers

SOCIAL & LIFESTYLE

One of the most complained about facial features of Asian women is undefined eyes. This is why when the heavily-lined eye trend emerged many years back (think Avril Lavigne’s first album), the trend never quite disappeared as the thick black line helps make eyes stand out more.

But using too much eyeliner can do quite the opposite — it makes the eye shape look small, and you might end up looking like a raccoon. It also risks getting messy and runny during the day, especially in hot and humid weather.

Forget matte, black eyeliner — this season is all about creatively accentuating the eyes. In the 2014 Spring-Summer Haute Couture Show, make-up artist Peter Philips creatively interpreted Karl Lagerfeld’s key words — “iridescent” and “focus on the eyes”.

“We decided to go for light and fresh make-up with a twist. The lightness lays in natural-looking skin with Perfection Lumiere Velvet and blush Joues Contraste Espiègle. Lips are kept natural with Rouge Coco Shine Satisfaction. For the eye make-up, on the contrary, I went for a classic black eyeliner made with Ligne Graphique Chanel Noir Noir combined with an exaggerated holographic under-eyeliner in different sized silver sequins,” said Philips.

To further enhance the dreamy/dramatic eyes, he brought the upper lashes forward with black mascara and painted the waterline with brightening nude eyeliner. The effect is fun, glamourous and dramatic, and makes the eyes pop.

MAC also focuses on the eyes this season in its trend The New Eye-Deal, seen in numerous runway shows this season. After many seasons of the masculine, angular make-up trends, now the detail has shifted back to the more feminine aspect of the eyes.

Of course, liners and kohls will continue to be popular, but they are given a more feminine twist. The bare make-up with focus on the eyes is hardly anything new, but it’s the new interpretation and perspective that makes this season’s eye make-up different.

“Certain details are timeless and beyond trend — it is the canvas of the skin, their execution and the mood elsewhere on the face that makes them modern,” said make-up artist Terry Barber.

In short, he said The New Eye-Deal trend reinvents the eye accents that subtly play into contemporary enhancement. Light, textures and colours all come to play. Experiment with sparkles, glitter, matte colours, and neon hues to create a look that best suits your mood and personality.
