Legal action against North 'separatists'

Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha has ordered the 3rd Army commander to take legal action against a group of people in the North carrying out activities in the name of the "Sor Por Por Lanna", which may be a serious breach of the law, deputy army spokesman Winthai Suwari said on Sunday.

Col Winthai said security-related agencies have decided that the activities - in the name of Sor Por Por Lanna, which may be construed as a secessionist movement which is against the law because the Kingdom cannot be separated.

Moreover, the activities are non-constructive and inappropriate, he said.

"Gen Prayuth has ordered Lt Gen Preecha Chan-ocha, the 3rd Army commander, to take legal action against the group," Col Winthai said.

The Army deputy spokesman asked the northern people to be careful about the way they expressed themselves.

"Expression of different opinions is a legitimate right allowed by the Constitution. But, expression of a desire to separate the country is out of the line and cannot be done," Col Winthai said.

A red-shirt group has said it is ready to separate the country if its fight against the anti-government protesters is unsuccessful.

Placards with a message announcing a new country under the name of “Isan-Lanna” have been found in many provinces in the North and Northeast. The placards call for weapons collections to fight the People's Democratic Reform Committee and protect caretaker Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra.
