ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT

Welcome to Guru’s Gate Crasher, your ultimate guide to finding something fresh to do in this big city.

Grand Opening

The biggest fireworks of the weekend will indeed pop over the Grand Opening White Party of Nikki Beach Phuket (www.nikkibeach.com/phuket) down on the southern island tonight (Mar 7). Getting away from the tourist throng of Patong, this 10th incarnation of the international party brand features a beach club and restaurant located on Layan Beach, Bangtao; fresh in the Andaman Sea breeze. The brand’s signature plush, all-white sun beds, drapery and teepees located throughout the property are all on show. After a soft opening in Jan, it’s ready to go big for the official launch of its second venue in Thailand following the US, France, Spain, French West Indies, Morocco and Mexico. To get involved with this blast off, normal tickets are B1,000; available from http://goo.gl/FMH1oH. Or splurge on a private bed or table for the night (B16,000-B26,400). Start time is 8pm. Splash out in style with all that money you’ve saved during the protests.

ART EXHIBITION

Back on the mainland, Everything All At Once Now (And Then Some) is a sound installation by Scot Cotterell that will open tonight (Mar 7) at Speedy Grandma (672/50-52 Soi Charoen Krung 28, fb.com/SpeedyGrandma). The installation features “No Input”, a sound performance that is reference- heavy and typically a bundle of intersecting references, observations and fascinations. Start time is 7pm. Entry is free.

SPOKEN WORD

Gaining momentum is Bangkok Lyrical Lunacy that will host its third event tonight (Mar 7) under the theme of “Get Lucky”. Not sure if Pharrell will be on hand to wax (probably not), but the event will feature regular poets KJ Miner, Gabi Moriarty, Pablo Saba, John Kim, plus anybody else bold enough to say something out loud; which seems to be the MO of the day, politically speaking. Venue for this time is Apoteka Thonglor (G/F, Grass, Thong Lor Soi 12, fb.com/ApotekaThonglor), with an 8pm kick-off. Entry is free.

PARTY

Just in case you don’t have enough options tonight (Mar 7), Dudesweet will host another of its regular ubiquitous hoedowns... just because. Under the cheeky and self-referential theme “What A Lot of Parties?!”, the night will unravel to the tune of DJs Boo & Aim Slur as well as Panlert and DJ Goodenough. Venue is Cosmic Cafe (RCA Block C, fb.com/cosmiccafe). Entry is B250 with a drink. Dress “Sharp”, they’re saying.

LIVE MUSIC

The live gig of the weekend will come from all-girl outfit Yellow Fang who will play what is billed as “Surf and Sound” on Sun (Mar 9). Presented by Rip Curl and Flow House (fb.com/FlowHouseBangkok), the venue is still pushing to broaden its horizons in terms of functionality. Props to them for trying to give us new hobbies. Support will come from DJs Nanziee, Praewa and Gramaphone Children. Entry is free with a run time from 3-9pm. Singha Light will be two-for-one from 4-6pm.

DJs

As they do every year, the Germans are on holiday in Thailand with a crate of records (or a hard drive) tucked under each arm. Thai Break is slated for Mar on the islands, but the guys will play a city show on Tue (Mar 11) at V Club (37 Sukhumvit Soi 11, fb.com/VClubBangkok). Details are still forming, but expect beats late and great. Check FB or call 082-308-3246 for info. G
