The Pheu Thai Party on Tuesday issued a statement accusing independent agencies of conspiring to nullify the general election.
The statement was read to a press conference by Pokin Polakul, a member of Pheu Thai's strategy committee, in the presence of the party's legal team.
The statement said the Office of the Ombudsman did not have the authority to forward a petition seeking to nullify the Feb 2 election to the Constitution Court, while the charter court did not have the authority to accept the petition for consideration but did so, showing disrespect for the constitution and the rule of law.
The statement said several independent agencies had conspired with political groups to invalidate the Feb 2 election.
Acts of conspiracy include the Election Commission's unwillingness to organise the polls, the Office of the Ombudsman's acceptance of the petition seeking to nullify the poll and the Constitution Court's decision to take the petition for consideration. The statement said the Democrat Party's decision to boycott the election and the People's Democratic Reform Committee's (PDRC) obstructions of voting were also part of the conspiracy, warning that all groups intended to invalidate the Feb 2 poll.
The statement said Pheu Thai respects decisions made by independent agencies within the constitution, but will not accept the actions of such organisations when they seek to exceed their proper limits.
The statement meanwhile warned the attempt by six independent organisations to organise talks between the government and the PDRC was as a move to bring down democracy, find an exit for the PDRC, and clear the way for the Democrat Party to contest a new election.
The party said that the talks could also have been intended to cause a political vacuum which could lead to the use of Section 7 of the constitution to appoint a "neutral" prime minister or manufacture a coup.
