Heroin haul in chilled-fish boxes

RANONG – Two men have been arrested with a total of 147 kilogrammes of heroin hidden in boxes normally used to pack fresh fish for delivery as chilled cargo to Malaysia.

The narcotics control police based in Surat Thani raided two shophouses belongingd to Pitsamai International Trading Service Co in Muang district on Tuesday night. Police found 420 packages of heroin with a total weight of 147kg and arrested two men, one Thai and one Malaysian.

Police wwere acting on a tip off that company had smuggled heroin out of Thailand by hiding it amongst fish exported by land to Malaysia.

According to Thai media reports, the price of a kilo of heroin is one to three million baht in local markets, depending on quality, making the total seizure worth 147 million - 441 million baht. The value would increase many times when sold on the overseas market.
