Police step up search for missing Russian in Phuket

Police will start foot patrols in tambon Cherng Taley in Phuket today to look for clues to help them find the missing Russian businessman.

The officers decided to conduct the search in this tambon of Thalang district after they questioned the girlfriend of Alexei Slabinskiy, who believes the victim may have been "dropped" there, according to Phuket police.

Cherng Taley is where 23-year-old Yana Strizheus was discovered injured in a hotel room on March 16, more than a week after the couple were reported missing on the island.

It remains unknown whether Mr Slabinskiy is alive. Police investigators suspect he is being held captive by a gang who have abducted him, but they cannot confirm his condition.

The relatives and friends of Mr Slabinskiy have offered a cash reward of 600,000 baht for any information that could lead to the missing man and the capture of the suspects.

Police believe at least three suspects are involved in the case, but they have so far only been able to obtain evidence to ask the Phuket Provincial Court to issue warrants for the arrest of two of them.

The pair are Russian nationals Alexsandr Novichkov, 58, and Olexsande Boychuk, 44.

According to the Phuket News' sister newspaper Novosti Phuketa, Mr Boychuk was a former officer of the Russian Far East Fleet.

He is also wanted by Russian authorities after he injured a man in a fight.

The newspaper report quoted Russian newspaper Izvestia's claim that Mr Boychuk fled to Phuket and is using a Ukrainian passport.

Phuket police are working with Russian nationals on the island to search for Mr Boychuk and Mr Novichkov.

They believe the suspects are still hiding on Phuket.

Ms Strizheus earlier told police the disappearance of her boyfriend resulted from a conflict with the two men.

The 39-year-old property developer, together with his girlfriend, went missing from his home in tambon Kamala in Kathu district sometime after March 7.
