Chalerm: No foreigners at UDD rally

Rumours that immigrant workers were being enlisted to join the red-shirt rally on Saturday to swell numbers were groundless, caretaker Labour Minister Chalerm Yubamrung said on Friday.

In his capacity as the chief of Centre for Maintaining Peace and Order, Mr Chalerm said Friday that he had information showing no immigrant workers, or Cambodians, had been invited to take part in the rally by the United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD) at Utthayan Road (formerly known as Aska Road) in Thawi Watthana district.

Chalerm Yubamrung says no immigrant workers or Cambodians will join planned red-shirt rally on Saturday.

He said he had learned that red-shirt supporters had started to travel from Northeastern provinces to Bangkok.

The UDD and anti-government protesters under the People’s Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) both plan rallies of supporters in Bangkok on Saturday.

The PDRC supporters will gather at their main rally site in Lumpini Park.

Mr Chalerm said the police, the army and civilian guards would take care of both rallies and would make sure the two groups do not clash.
