EC endorses 58 senators

The Election Commission (EC) has endorsed winning candidates from 58 provinces who took part in the March 30 Senate election, with 19 others still under investigation for alleged violations of the poll law, EC secretary-general Puchong Nutrawong announced yesterday.

Mr Puchong said the endorsement of the winning candidates was agreed at an EC meeting yesterday morning.

The EC endorsed candidates who had no complaints filed against them.

The 19 others were still under investigation because they had a total of 44 complaints filed against them, mostly for alleged violation of the election law such as campaigning for votes beyond the legal limits, smearing other candidates in their speeches, and putting up campaign signs at prohibited locations.

The 19 senators-elect not yet endorsed are for Bangkok, Chaiyaphum, Nakhon Nayok, Pathum Thani, Phetchabun, Phrae, Mae Hong Son, Ranong, Lop Buri, Lampang, Lamphun, Si Sa Ket, Samut Prakan, Samut Sakhon, Sing Buri, Surat Thani, Nong Bua Lamphu, Amnat Charoen and Ubon Ratchathani provinces.

Four complaints were filed against the Bangkok winner based on allegations of defamation and of breaching the rules on election campaign posters. Mr Puchong said while 44 complaints were made against the poll winners, two complaints were directed at the EC for their poor organisation of the Senate election.

The EC will speed up its investigation in order to wrap it up before the end of this month, which is the deadline for the commission to endorse the winning candidates.
