The Vietnamese capital has drawn up a plan to build its first monorail train in the city in the latest bid to ease traffic gridlock.

The Hanoi People's Committee and the Transport Ministry are jointly working on the detail of the project, which could be in the build-operate-transfer form, the Vietnam News reported.

The 38km line will run in western Hanoi with 14 stations, with a capacity to move 60,0000 passengers a day, it added.

The Vietnam Construction and Import-Export Corporation proposed the monorail route back in 2010 at a speed of 70km per hour.

As Vietnam's economy grows, more vehicles, largely motorcycles, ply the streets in both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, causing traffic congestion during peak hours at the two largest cities in the country.
